Coventry, United Kingdom-based Severn Trent Laboratories (STL) Ltd has acquired the field analytical tools business, Cybersense. The purchase means STL now offers a complete solutions package combining advanced field analytical tools with the company’s existing equipment sales and onsite sampling services.
On-site tools now available from STL can rapidly analyze samples for a number of determinants including commercially significant petrochemical by-products, such as BTEX, PAH, heavy metals and explosives. The tools utilize a range of technologies and have various performance parameters and capabilities. Their unifying feature, however, is their ability to produce effective, accurate data onsite, typically in a matter of minutes. Standard laboratory analysis can take, on average, five to 15 days to complete following sampling.
It has been demonstrated that an integrated approach – combining the use of field analytical tools to deliver real-time data on large numbers of samples with traditional laboratory data to produce accredited, legally compliant results – can deliver significant benefits. In the contaminated land industry, this approach has been proven to provide more sustainable and cost-effective site investigation and remediation work. Because the field tools deliver real-time data in minutes rather than days contaminated land clean-up contractors can make rapid decisions regarding site investigation and take increased numbers of samples in less time. As a result, these contractors are able to define contamination hot spots more effectively and surgically remove the contamination, often leading to a reduction in plant and personnel costs. Where required, samples can be sent to the laboratory for further analysis that meets regulatory requirements and industry standards. This combined approach means the amount of material requiring landfill can be reduced, addressing a major environmental problem facing economies throughout the world.
In the United States, there are a number of examples of site investigation and remediation work that have been greatly enhanced by the use of field analytical tools. Combining these tools with high quality analytical laboratory analysis has been proven to deliver cost and efficiency benefits. Likewise, in the United Kingdom, projects utilizing field analytical tools are becoming increasingly common and demonstrate clear commercial value.
Through the acquisition, STL now also offers Cybersense’s patent-pending statistical tool, DUMAT™. DUMAT relates the performance of a field analytical tool to laboratory analysis. The program provides the customer with crucial verification, by referencing laboratory data, that the field tool they are using is producing accurate on-site data that can be trusted. STL also provides experienced engineers to operate the field tools and conduct on-site analysis on behalf of customers.
Over the coming months, STL will incorporate Cybersense into its existing field services division, enabling the company to provide a value-added environmental solution that delivers project cost savings and time efficiencies for the contaminated land industry.
