SW Florida Wastewater Treatment Facility Wins Earle B. Phelps Award The Fiesta Village Advanced Wastewater Treatment (AWT) Plant in Lee County, Fla. has received the 2003 Earle B. Phelps Award for Best AWT facility in the state. Using Severn Trent Services' TETRA filters for denitrification, the plant has received the Phelps Award nine times in the past 13 years. The award was presented by the Florida Water Environment Association at its Florida Water Resources Conference on May 18.
Established in 1985, Fiesta Village is a five million gallons a day advanced activated sludge wastewater treatment plant. The facility processes wastewater for the South Ft. Myers and Cypress Lakes areas producing quality effluent to be utilized as reuse. The reuse system consists of approximately 3 miles of reuse distribution mains that provide irrigation for golf courses and other entities. If reuse is not being utilized, the plant is permitted to discharge to the Caloosahatchee River. The Fiesta Village plant uses an oxidation ditch activated sludge process that incorporates nitrification/denitrification zones and phosphorus removal. The activated sludge is then separated in a clarifier where the activated sludge sinks to the bottom and the effluent is sent to filters. The activated sludge is either returned to the plant process or stabilized in digesters. Once stabilized, these nutrient-rich biosolids are then used for fertilizer in fields. The effluent is filtered and disinfected with chlorine and sent to reuse customers within the reuse system. If the effluent is being discharged to the river, it is injected with sulfur dioxide to remove the chlorine from the effluent. In addition to the Phelps Award, the facility has won numerous honors for advanced wastewater treatment. Water and Wastewater Solutions congratulates Fiesta Village for its outstanding record of achievement. For more information, email info@severntrentservices.com. |
