The Expert Q&A: EPA Arsenic Treatment Compliance Deadline
As the January 2006 EPA compliance date for arsenic levels in
drinking water approaches, community water systems will have to
achieve an arsenic maximum contamination level (MCL) of 10 parts
per billion.
Water and Wastewater Solutions interviewed industry expert
Tom Carmody about the impact and compliance issues surrounding
this federal regulation. The complete question and answer session
follows.
Chemical disinfectants are widely used by public water systems
as protection against microbial contaminants in drinking water.
Reactions of these chemicals with the source water can lead to
the formation of disinfectant byproducts (DBP) in the drinking
water. DBPs have been linked to certain forms of cancer and birth
defects. In an effort to reduce the incidence of disease, the
EPA has proposed the Stage 2 Disinfection Byproducts Rule (Stage
2 DBPR), which requires maximum containment levels at each public
water site.
