TETRA® Nitrifying Submerged Aerated Filters
The advantages of biological treatment offered by Submerged Aerated Filters (SAF) are now widely accepted and, as a result, the technology has become established for waste water treatment worldwide. The TETRA® Nitrifying SAF (NSAF), provided by Severn Trent Services, is proving to be a very robust solution for Tertiary Ammonia Removal, with a number of installations in recent years.
The TETRA NSAF is an up-flow, fixed-film biological reactor and uses blast furnace slag media for efficient ammonia removal, offering surface areas up to 240m2/m3.The media cannot collapse or be lost by flotation, and with a proven, long lifetime, media replacement costs are minimised. The greater thermal capacity of the media compared to plastic alternatives helps to maintain high levels of ammonia removal during winter periods.
A standard TETRA NSAF utilises a simple process in which air is supplied at a fixed rate, thus eliminating the need for any overly complicated control system. Simple monitoring of the process blower(s) and switching over to the standby unit if necessary are the primary operational requirements. The recently developed NSAF+ system offers significant savings in electricity costs over a conventional NSAF plant.
