The nitrogen we consume as protein in our food is not all used in our bodies, and so each day we excrete nitrogen in the form of ammonia. Since ammonia is toxic to fish and other animals, wastewater treatment plants have been designed to convert ammonia to nitrate, which is not toxic to fish. Nitrate however, promotes plant growth, so excess levels can cause algae blooms and other environmentally harmful situations. In addition, nitrates can be harmful for human consumption if introduced into drinking water supplies. During denitrification, nitrates are biologically converted into nitrogen gas to play an integral role in maintaining the integrity of the receiving waters of wastewater treatment plant.
