STL Scoop IWO Innovation Award

Severn Trent Laboratories (STL) Ltd recently scooped a prestigious award for a new analytical method for the investigation of Pesticides in Drinking Water. STL were successfully chosen as the Product Category award winner at the Institute of Water Officers (IWO) Wales Innovation Awards 2008, at the ceremony earlier this month.

The analysis of pesticides is a complex and often costly process. The method developed by STL utilises Liquid Chromatography, Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry (LC-QQQ) to reduce the steps involved in the analytical process thereby reducing labour and other associated costs. STL’s Technical Development Team and potable water laboratory teams worked together to develop a method that improves the speed and quality of analysis by utilising the LC-QQQ technology. In developing the new method, STL have been able to reduce the sample preparation processes, reduce their environmental impact by removing some of the hazardous reagents associated with the process and also reduce electricity consumption for the process by over 60%.

STL are the first water laboratory to use the technology in this way to analyse over 50 pesticides. The analytical results generated by this new method can be used for routine pesticide monitoring in Drinking Water and meet Drinking Water Inspectorate requirements. STL’s customers have benefitted from reduced sample volume and improved quality of analysis as a direct result of the new method.
