There are currently four commonly accepted categories of membrane filtration systems, defined by the size of material it can remove from liquid. From the smallest to largest pore size, these are Reverse Osmosis (RO), Nanofiltration (NF), Ultrafiltration (UF), and Microfiltration (MF).
